LORRAINE GILBERT
Modernizing a landscape artist's digital presence
2025
type:
The Challenge: Preserving Art in a Digital Age
Lorraine
Gilbert, an established Canadian artist, possessed a vast and important
body of work documenting landscape as social and lived experience.
However, her digital home—a website built in the early 2010s—was failing
her. It was non-responsive, plagued by broken pages, and too slow for
modern audiences. This outdated platform was a barrier, preventing her
from effectively presenting her portfolio to galleries and curators. The
sheer volume of her life's work made the task of a revamp daunting,
leading to years of procrastination.

The Solution: A Collaborative and Intuitive Archive
Our
goal was twofold: to create a pristine, user-friendly archive that
honored the depth of her work and to empower Lorraine with a tool she
could confidently manage herself. We selected Format.com for its photography-centric templates and beginner-friendly backend, ensuring long-term sustainability.
The
process was highly collaborative. I supported Lorraine in streamlining
her vast archive, helping to reorganize project categories and create a
manageable to-do list that finally moved the project forward. The design
philosophy was one of "simplicity and story," where the artwork is the
undisputed hero. I introduced subtle storytelling elements into the
navigation to create an intuitive, flowing user experience.
Key Features & Creative Problem-Solving:
- Dynamic Project Pages: Integrated GIFs into her projects to reveal her artistic process, adding a layer of depth static images couldn't provide.

- Adapting Legacy Art:
For her interactive project "Conversation with Karl Blossfeldt," which
couldn't be migrated directly due to platform constraints, I recomposed
it into a compelling video piece. This innovative solution preserved the
narrative and feeling of the original artwork for a new medium.
- Client Empowerment: Provided comprehensive training on the Format CMS, turning a technical hurdle into an opportunity for client independence.
The Result: A Finished Legacy and a Relieved Artist
The
result is a clean, professional, and fully responsive archival website
that truly represents Lorraine Gilbert's significant artistic
contributions. The client was thrilled, expressing immense relief that a
years-long goal was finally achieved. She now has a digital portfolio
she is proud to share, ensuring her work continues to inspire and
provoke conversation for years to come.
